Learn about Microfinance

Money donated to C2 goes entirely to Grameen Foundation as part of their Ingenuity Fund Challenge (see side bar). Grameen Foundation provides capital and technology to microfinance institutions around the world.

Microfinance provides very small loans, or micro-loans, to poor people, mostly women, to start or expand very small, self-sufficient businesses. Through their own ingenuity and drive, and the support of the lending microfinance institution (MFI), poor women are able start their journey out of poverty.  Just a few of these miraculous success stories are told here: http://www.grameenfoundation.org/our-impact.

Did you know?

With $30, a woman can buy food to start a snack stand.
With $50, a woman can buy thread and fabric to supply her embroidery business.
With $100, a woman can buy a small stove to prepare food to sell.
With $150, a woman can buy seeds, tools and fertilizer to grow more corn and rice to eat and sell.
With $250, a woman can buy a cell phone kit and become the pay phone for her community.

Beyond micro-loans, MFIs also provide the building blocks of basic financial assurance to support the family life cycle.  With the right resources and technology, MFI's offer services such as savings, insurance, education, and healthcare.

Microfinance institutions enable ongoing provision for families, education for children, and adequate healthcare; the building blocks to peaceful, sustainable communities.  The result is freedom from having to make desperate decisions like selling drugs, yourself or even your children, destroying natural resources or having to resort to piracy or terrorism.  Most importantly, micro-loans can provide freedom to chase dreams and pursue the path of one’s own choice (a right most of us enjoy but often take for granted).
